The Secret FIRST STEP of Mindset Mastery

I’m often told ‘But, Laura, I simply can’t hear myself think” And THIS is the wonderful secret to the first step of Mindset Mastery: Objective Thinking.

We actually really do listen to ourselves all day long, every day. What have you been saying to yourself for the last 10 minutes, 10 days or, better yet, the last 10 years? We all have ‘scripts’ that run through our heads. Mindset Mastery begins here. It begins by listening to yourself think.

Take that first step and bridge the gap between subjective & objective thinking

Take that first step and bridge the gap between subjective & objective thinking

Understanding and correcting (if necessary) these scripts in your head is the most CRITICAL piece to understanding how mindset factors into your life. Most of these scripts were formed at a very young age. They were influenced by your family, by your friends, and by society. And, they probably were not very supportive if indeed accurate. Think back. Did you ever say “I’m ugly,” “I’m not good enough?” No doubt you said something like this and it was as far away from the truth as it could get.

I’m not sure how my script began but it formed until it was set in stone that ‘I was a fat, lazy, slob.’ No one told me that. But, subconsciously, it formed. Yes, it formed out of  a lack of self-esteem and confidence. Yes, it formed from the magazines. But, it formed none the less. It certainly was not accurate ~ my history tells that. Can you imagine how that manifested throughout adult hood until I began to hear it in my early 30’s? Phew! Thank goodness, I took that first step to mindset mastery!

When you think, without challenging your thoughts, you are thinking subjectively. Now, that you are older and wiser, it is time to check in on these now deep seeded scripts and see how accurate they are. This is known as objective thinking. If your thoughts are accurate and supportive, keep them. If they are not true, discard them and replace them with more positive, meaningful ones. It  took time for me to go from ‘fat, lazy, slob’ to ‘strong, vibrant and organized’. But, I did. Can you imagine decisions and choices made from this point of mindset mastery?

Thinking objectively is a skill that is acquired. Like any skill, with a little practice, it becomes much simpler to do.  Objective thinking is the first step in mindset mastery that allows you to find out who you are. It allows the constant chatter to quiet down. It’s in this process that you can begin to really hear the answers to your questions. It’s in this space that the best decisions are made and the best course of action to take is made. So the next time the chatter box in your head goes off, stop to REALLY ‘hear yourself think’.

Sit Down and write yourself a letter one that describes who you are to another friend. Write without thinking. No doubt, this exercise will cause you to pause and move into the first step of mindset mastery. What scripts have you used before?

  1. I always need practice, especially when I start getting stuck on the same things!

Getting stuck and restuck is not a fun space to be in is it? Try to identify the word or two words you say to yourself when you get into this space and then be hyper~vigilant about ‘listening’ for them. When you hear them, it will trigger that you might be just about to get stuck again! Hope that helps ~ KEEP SMILING

  2. This is why I love meditation. You get to step way back and watch your crazy thoughts as they move through. And getting that distance always makes me smile and know that they are, in fact, just thoughts. And in some ways, they have nothing to do with who I really am. What is that phrase… you are not your mind.

Oh, I’ve heard “You are not your emotions” before but not “You are not your mind”. And certainly that is so very true. and Meditation is fantastic for letting them go! thanks, Nancy!
