How to Master Uncertainty

Life certainly gives us curve balls. Uncertainty surrounds us each and every day and many people focus on them. What they do not appreciate is that there are signs of certainty surrounding us just as much if not more but they never see them let alone look for them. To master uncertainty, you must look at all the possibilities that surround you. Sometimes, you must even ask for them.

Uncertainty, signs of life

Signs Of Life

Last weekend at my Awaken & Empower Your Intuition Retreat in Rhode Island, I awoke uncertain. I knew in my soul that it was to be an inspiring event. In my head, the gremlins were talking. So, I went down to the lake at sunrise to ask the Spirit of The East (which is associated with thoughts) to clear negative thinking and to show me a sign that I was indeed on the right path. I took the picture to the right above. And, I knew, then and there that I was safe and I was ‘home’ and that I was indeed able to live through the mystery of the day and love it. See, the picture on the left, is the view I’ve seen every summer for the past 40 years. It is from the deck of my family’s summer home in New Hampshire. They view was almost exactly the same!!! And, I smiled and knew that you CAN look and ask for signs to confirm and support you any time, any day.

In his book, The Art Of Uncertainty, Dennis Merrit Jones writes about learning to love the unknown by staying present in the moment. My biggest take aways from the book is The Power of the 3 P’s: perseverance, persistence and passion. They serve as guideposts along your journey.  To have these on your journey, to have defined what your soul wants you to do and follow that compass with the 3 p’s and ask for guidance along the way. Our Soul knows what journey to take and knows that we have the potential to do whatever is our truest desire. It knows that we are already successful regardless of where we are on that journey.

It’s that unknown, the uncertainty, that stops so many people. It’s the mystery of it that creates roadblocks. Had I let the unknown mystery of how the day would unfold at the retreat, I know that those in attendance would NOT have had the strong, supportive experience that they did. My uncertainty would have blocked the energy of my passion. I asked for support from my thoughts to be quieted down and aligned. I asked for support from above (in this case the Spirit of the East) and I was given that in spades!  It’s important to see that uncertainty, that roadblock, acknowledge it and ask for support from within and above.  So that you can move in and past the uncertainty to love the journey and ‘in-joy’ the ride!

What parts of uncertainty have held you back in the past? What are you uncertain of now? And, how can you ask for support to get past it and live in the joy of it? Hint: Acknowledging it in the comments is the start of releasing the fear of it and embracing the joy of it!

  1. Laura, your “curve ball” comment reminds me of a profound saying I saw on – wait for it – a HarleyDavidson T-shirt: “When life throws you a curve, lean into it.” 🙂

  2. Curve balls come at us every day…as does uncertainty. Learning to be comfortable with the uncomfortable is what I have found to be most helpful. Your post points us right down that path.

  3. Love the new look for the site, Laura.

Funny you should write this….on a Journey I took several years ago, my spirit guides told me that I didn’t need to know anything but the next 200 yards of road ahead. I’d been railing at that ever since until a few weeks ago. Slowly and with the help of my spiritual coach, I came to realize that I am meant to stay focused in the present and that this is (maybe) the life lesson I came to this version of my soul life to learn.

  4. I started really diving into “certainty” and “uncertainty” when I went to the UPW event with Tony Robbins… It’s funny how certainty and uncertainty can affect our lives as the primary driving force. I was once guided by “certainty” and as it supported me for many many years… It also has the ability to hold one back…

The Yin & Yang of life!!! Kelly, yes, certainty can guide you forward. Example: I am certain about my passion and purpose in life. But, in that certainty, i once allowed myself to be held back….the yin and yang…..Great you see this!!! 🙂

  6. Laura,
I love this blog and the timing is perfect for me as I grow and expand! That inner critic is a huge roadblock for many and I think it is so important to treat ourselves with love and self-compassion and acknowledge those feelings and ask support and guidance from spirit. I also feel having faith is a huge part and so many times we want proof that things are going to be OK. I’m looking forward to purchasing that book “The Art of Uncertainty.”

Martha!!!! I’ve always said: Proof is for scientists ~ Faith is for spiritualists! And, yes it is really hard when our ego head and inner critic start to yammer away at us. Uncertainty=curiosity and in that Joy appears. Have Faith always and KEEPS SMILING 🙂

  7. Laura, this is a great reminder and perfect timing for me to read this post! There are many days that I wake up uncertain and it is good to know to ask for signs that you are on the right path, it’s not something that I have thought about before.

  9. Laura, love your quote “Our Soul knows what journey to take and knows that we have the potential to do whatever is our truest desire.” Like you I follow the guidance of my soul and have learned that my greatest gifts/breakthroughs/successes have come when I kept moving forward even in uncertainty. 10. Our family is deep into baseball season and boy, do we know about curve balls 🙂 I so appreciate you sharing the 3 p’s – very helpful. I have think I grew up with the idea that things were supposed to be easy and clear. Uncertainty was a sign to stop…even step backwards or quit for good. Now, I am beginning to to see the power of uncertainty and how to navigate it with more curiosity and grace. I am so thankful for this awareness. Asking for guidance has a power tool that I don’t use enough… thanks for the reminder!

Baseball? Did someone say Baseball? Best sport in the world and it’s teachings go WAY beyond the diamond!! Curve balls, foul balls, home runs YES!!! I so understand how uncertainty can stop you from stealing the base ahead that is rightfully yours! And, am glad you have created awareness for yourself around this 🙂 KEEP SMILING
